In his writings on Process Planning, Isozaki Arata expressed a skepticism of “complete” architecture. This aversion to an over-deterministic design outlook has renewed relevancy as architects consider a critical engagement with rehabilitation and reuse.
Is it possible for architects to act not solely as designers, but also as caretakers of the built environment? Can we work with existing conditions to find ways that extend their longevity and utility?
This work considers these propositions through an act of “brush-up”, modifying the environment of the second floor space of the Whitehouse Gallery. Conceived as a protective cloche for an existing window, a layer of secondary glazing frames the original opening to augment its acoustic and thermal performance. In doing so, the view of Shinjuku beyond the walls of Whitehouse - clouded by the frosted glass of the structure’s original window - is revealed.

磯崎新は『プロセス・プランニング』の中で、建築を形が定まったものではなく、常に変わっていくものとして捉える見方を提議した。そのような建築のあり方に対する違和感は、現代の建築家が再生や再利用に対して批評的に建築の設計対象として捉え直そうとする姿勢との親和性がある。
建築家がデザイナーとしてだけでなく、建築とその周りの環境の管理者として行動することは可能だろうか？　私たちは既存の環境と寄り添いながら、新たな実用性を与えて存続させることができるだろうか？
私たちは、ホワイトハウスの２階スペースの環境に手を加えて「ブラッシュアップ」することで、この命題に取り組んだ。既存の窓を保護する覆いとしての新しい窓は、元の開口部を縁取り防音と遮熱の性能を高め、さらに、元の窓の曇りガラスによって隔たれていたホワイトハウス向こうに広がる新宿の景色が姿を現すことになる。
